Getting around

The area was built around cars, but the trail network is genuinely usable for getting places, not just for recreation.

Driving

The highway into Victoria is the bottleneck, and the commuter peaks are long rather than sharp. Plan around them and distances here are short.

Trails as routes

The Galloping Goose Regional Trail runs on a former rail grade from downtown Victoria out through the West Shore and beyond, and the E&N Rail Trail parallels part of the same corridor closer in. Both are paved or hard-packed for most of their length and are used by commuters, not only by weekend riders.

Transit

Buses connect the main West Shore centres with downtown Victoria. Service is frequent on the trunk routes and thin in the rural areas — Metchosin and the Highlands are not places to rely on a bus.
