West of Victoria
The West Shore is the group of municipalities immediately west of Victoria on southern Vancouver Island. It is where the city thins out into lakes, regional parks and a shoreline you can still walk for an hour without meeting anyone.
Where it is
Langford, Colwood, View Royal, Metchosin and the Highlands sit along and above the Trans-Canada Highway as it leaves Victoria. Driving, the nearer communities are a short trip from downtown outside rush hour; the same trip at 8am or 4:30pm is a different experience entirely.
What it is good for
Two things, mostly: regional parks that start where the subdivisions end, and a coastline with lagoons, beaches and salmon-bearing streams close enough to reach on an afternoon.
Weather
This is the mild, wet end of the Canadian climate. Winter here means rain and grey rather than deep cold, and the trails stay walkable year-round — with proper boots, because the low ground stays soft from November onward.
